Week of October 17th

Welcome to another wonderful week of kindergarten! I hope everyone had a very nice, relaxing break. Parent/teacher conferences are this week. Thank you to all who signed up, I know you are all very busy and I appreciate your time. If you have a morning conference before 7:30 I will come meet you at the gate of the school to let you in at your time. If you have an afternoon conference it will probably be in the cafeteria. Thank you!
We are going on a field trip to the Pumpkin Patch on Tuesday, October 25th to go pick out a pumpkin. The cost for the field trip is $6 per person and permission slips were sent home last Monday. Please turn in all slips and money by this Wednesday, October 19th.
This week homework will go home today, Monday, and is due on Friday. We are working on writing words that we are learning to sound out in phonics. This week we are learning the letter N and the sound it makes. Ask your student to identify the letter and the sound it makes. Some fun games to play to help with this are letter Bingo or a game we call “Flyhunter.”
Also please count with your student every night. Our next goal to count to without skipping any numbers is 50. Please also review what the teen numbers look like, these are often a challenge for students.
It is starting to get cold outside and that means it is sweater season! Sweaters and sweatshirts that are acceptable in the classroom are solid red, navy blue or white. If your student wears a different color not in dress code they may wear it outside but not in the classroom. Please label your student’s sweater or jacket. If it goes missing it is much easier to find if it is labeled with a first and last name.
I'm looking forward to a great week!

Week of October 10th

Welcome to another, very short, week of school! Can you believe we are already almost done with the first quarter? This Wednesday is the last day of the quarter and there is no lunch and no after school that day. It can be a little hectic out in the parking lot that day so I try to get us all outside at about 11:20. We will be sitting on the backside of the east brick wall that faces the office.
Report cards will be going home this week and conferences will be next week. If you have not signed up for a conference time yet please do asap! I need to meet with everyone this week. They are short 10 minute conferences so please be on time!
We are going on a field trip to the Pumpkin Patch on Tuesday, October 25th to go pick out a pumpkin. The cost for the field trip is $6 per person and I will send permission slips home today. If you would like to chaperone please let me know. Unfortunately there is very limited room on the bus so if you would like to come you would need to drive. It will be a great time though and I hope as many of you can make it as possible!
We have been practicing writing the letters l, o, g, h, t, p and a. Please keep reviewing these sounds and letters at home. There will be no homework this week due to the short week, please enjoy your break! Starting next week we will have homework packets that go home on Monday and come back on Fridays.
This Wednesday is the last day of the quarter so your student may wear Friday dress, jeans and a collared shirt or LPA shirt. Have a wonderful and safe break and we will see everyone back on Monday, October 17th!
I'm looking forward to another great week!

Week of September 12th

Hello all! I hope you had a nice weekend and are ready for another very exciting week of kindergarten!
If you would like to come and volunteer in class, or join us for fieldtrips throughout the year, you need to get your fingerprints done in the front office. I would like to recommend getting them done well before our first field trip so that you do not have to worry about it closer to the date.
Can you believe we are already half way through the first quarter of school? Time is just flying by! I will be sending home the mid-quarter progress reports today, Monday the 12th. Please read and sign the attached sheet and send back to school.
Thank you to all who have brought in their art shirts! If you have not yet brought in your shirt please bring one in as soon as possible. It will go over the clothes they are wearing so a big shirt is probably a good idea. Please make sure that you write your student’s name on the tag of the shirt so that there is no confusion about whose shirt is whose! We will use these throughout the year as well during painting time.
We have been practicing writing our names and writing the letters l, o, and g. Please work on this with your student at home! I will send a homework sheet home on Tuesday for the students to practice their names and letters. It will be due back on Thursday. We are slowly working up to homework packets.
This week we will also be learning about the letter “H”. How to write it correctly and what sound the letter makes. We are also continuing our Fairy Tale unit and meeting all sorts of new characters and hearing new stories!
Looking forward to another great week!

Week of September 6th

Welcome back to another very exciting week of kindergarten! I hope that everyone had a very nice, relaxing long weekend and is ready for tomorrow!
Our first Duds for Dollars is tomorrow, Wednesday, September 7th. Students may dress down in whatever they would like to wear, with in dress code, if they bring a dollar into school! This is a great way to raise money for our classroom and a chance to let the students show off their style!
It was so nice having a chance to meet with all of the parents again this last week at Open House! Thank you for coming by and taking a look at our room and some of the great learning we will be doing this year.
We really like to paint in class so if each student could bring in an old shirt that they put on when we paint, that would be great! It will go over the clothes they are wearing so a big shirt is probably a good idea. Please make sure that you write your student’s name on the tag of the shirt so that there is no confusion about whose shirt is whose! We will probably use these throughout the year as well during painting time.
We have been practicing writing our names in class these first weeks of school and making sure that the only letter that is capitalized in our name is the first letter. Please work on this with your student at home! I will send a homework sheet home on Wednesday for the students to practice their names. It will be due back on Thursday. This week we will also be learning about the letter “G”. How to write it correctly and what sound the letter makes. We have finished our garden unit and are now working on Fairy Tales. We are also working on writing our numbers to 10 and singing the song that helps us remember how to write our numbers.
I'm looking forward to another very exciting week!

Week of August 22nd

La Paloma Academy is selling Entertainment Books again this year and we are trying to raise as much money as possible for our school! The books will go home today Monday, the 22nd and will be able to be sold until August 31st. If you have any questions please let me or the front office know!
La Paloma will be having it’s Open House on Wednesday, August 31st, starting at 6pm and going until 8pm. We would love for you to come by and see our classroom and check out the school! We also have picture day this Thursday, August 25th.
On Fridays your student is allowed to wear jeans instead of the normal khaki or blue dockers. The jeans need to be blue jeans though, please no colored jeans or other skirts and shorts.
The first Wednesday of every month is Dress Down for a Dollar Day. Your student may wear whatever they would like (within dress code) for a dollar. We use this money in our classroom throughout the year!
La Paloma Academy has set up an e-blogger for all of us teachers! I am getting mine up and running and so far have added some great educational websites that your students can check out while they are browsing the web. Some of the websites that are really great for kids are pbskids.com and houghtonmifflin.com. There are reading and math games for kids which are a great way to have fun while learning to read and write.
We have been practicing writing our names in class this first week of school and making sure that the only letter that is capitalized in our name is the first letter. Please work on this with your student at home!
I'm looking forward to another great week!

Week of August 15th

Welcome to the first full week of school! We are doing so much in class, I know your student must have plenty to tell you about our days and must be exhausted when they get home!
Please remember your student needs to wear a collared shirt everyday to school. It may be red, navy blue or white, but needs to have a collar. Their shirts also need to be tucked into their pants or skirts at all times! Please make sure your student knows how important this is!
Monday-Friday the homework folder will go home with your student which has work that they have done in class and letters to go home. Please make sure that this folder comes back to school each day so that we can fill it with news and great new refrigerator art!
Attached to this newsletter is the snack calendar for this month and next. Everyday, except for Wednesdays, we will have an afternoon snack in class. It is important that we have a snack for each day so if there is problem with the day that you have been assigned please let me know and I would be happy to work something out with you. Snacks that work well are foods that are prepackaged and do not have to be refrigerated. Due to health code we can not serve food that has been prepared at home. Also please no snacks that have peanuts or nuts in them due to food allergies. There are 28 students in our class and please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the calendar!
We had a great first three days of school and I am very excited for this school year! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns this year. I am easiest to get a hold of through email but please feel free to call me at school as well. I am looking forward to working with both you and your student!
I'm looking forward to a great week!

We had a wonderful field trip to Old Pueblo Grille last Thursday. The kids loved it and had the chance to see how a real restaurant and kitchen works. The weather was beautiful at the park and we also got some great pictures for our end of the year slide show!

Week of April 4th

We are taking a field trip to the Old Pueblo Grille on Thursday, April 14th. The cost is $2 and permission slips were sent home last Tuesday. If you did not receive one for some reason please let me know and I will get one to you right away. Please have slips and money turned into me by Friday, April 8th. We will be using playing cards to quickly identify numbers to 10 and if they are more or less than this week. In order to have enough cards we will need each student to bring in a pack of playing cards. Have fun with it and bring in a fun, colorful pack of cards as soon as possible. In class this week we will be learning the letter Q and starting our restaurant unit. We are doing lots of reading and writing and are becoming pros at our writer’s workshop. We are still working on addition problems and basic patterns. We are also working on counting by fives and identifying nickels. We have begun to write our numbers to 100 and are practicing counting everyday. I am happy to see that so many students are practicing their writing and filling out their reading logs on their own. Please keep turning those reading logs in, I love to see what you are reading! Please start working with your student on their address and phone number. It is important that the student knows the address of the home that they are at most often and phone numbers that will be easiest for them to get a hold of someone. I know many students have two addresses so please practice both but make sure they know the primary address. I am looking forward to another great week!

We have had a parent generously offer to donate a DVD player to our classroom. Thank you so much for this help, I appreciate all of your help and support. If anyone is able to donate a pencil sharpener to our classroom we are still in need. There is a great one at Cosco with a lifetime warranty!
